Ford Motor Company made plenty of promises during the muscle car era, such as 427s in Mustangs and Boss 429s in Torinos and Cyclones. None of them panned out but, for some reason, Mercury scored a 427 for the special-edition Cougar GT-E. This car holds the distinction as being the last FoMoCo product to receive a 427 from the factory.
This 427 was somewhat different than those preceding it, as it now featured a hydraulic camshaft and hence was rated 20 horsepower less than the four-barrel version that was installed in a handful of Comets in 1967. Additionally, it was only available with an automatic transmission, a first for the 427.
