OAKLAND — A 17-year-old Pittsburg boy suffered a graze wound to the head Sunday night when gunfire erupted at a North Oakland sideshow, authorities said.

The youth was in stable condition at a hospital.

The shooting happened about 11:05 p.m. Sunday in the area of 45th and Market streets.

Police said the youth was standing at the intersection with numerous other people watching a sideshow, where drivers will rev their engines and pilot their cars in wild, chaotic ways in the middle of public streets.

Police said two vehicles participating in the sideshow got into a collision, prompting the occupants to stop and get out of the vehicles.

They then got into a physical confrontation, which ended with numerous gunshots being fired, police said. More than 20 shots were fired, according to a gunshot detection system alert.

The 17-year-old was the only person known to be hit by a bullet. At least one vehicle was also hit by gunfire.

The youth was driven to a hospital by some people in his group, authorities said.

The sideshow participants involved in the collision and shooting fled before police arrived. Descriptions of the suspects and their vehicles have not been released.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $5,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the shooters. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3426 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
