MARTINEZ — A one-vehicle crash early Sunday killed a driver on Highway 4, the California Highway Patrol said.
The fatality was the first of the year on Contra Costa County’s most dangerous highway. Fifteen fatal crashes occurred on Highway 4 in 2023, resulting in the deaths of 18 people, according to the CHP.
It was the 43rd fatal crash on the highway since Jan. 1, 2021.
According to the CHP, the driver was operating a utility task vehicle with two passengers down a wet and muddy road, and smashed into a chain-link fence while failing to make a turn on Wolcott Lane and Franklin Canyon Road.
The wreck happened about 11:10 a.m. Authorities pronounced the driver dead at the scene.
The two passengers were uninjured, the CHP said.
