RICHMOND — The relatively positive news over the record-low number of killings that this city recorded in 2023 took a backseat Wednesday morning after gunfire resulted in city’s first homicide of the year.
Officers responded to the 2900 block of Gomer Drive about 8:50 a.m. and found a man down inside a residence and bleeding, Richmond police Lt. Donald Patchin said. Officers rendered first aid until an ambulance arrived, but the man died at Kaiser-Permante Hospital in Richmond, he said.
Authorities early Friday identified the man as 47-year-old Charles Harvey, of Richmond.
Richmond recorded eight homicides in 2023 — the fewest since officials started keeping track in 1971. There were 18 homicides in the city in 2022 and 2021.
According to Patchin, police were following up on leads and did not have any information. Police did not identify any witnesses or say what they motive may have been.
