CONTRA COSTA COUNTY — BART will run service as normal on Tuesday, the agency announced, just a day after a train derailed and caught fire north of Orinda in Contra Costa County, injuring nine people.
The initial incident occurred just after 9 a.m. Monday on BART’s yellow line between the Orinda and Lafayette stations. According to spokesperson Jim Allison, the derailment happened on a section of track where trains typically transfer from one set of tracks to another. It remained unknown as of Tuesday morning whether the incident was caused by human error or mechanical malfunction.
While nine injuries were reported, none were severe, Allison said.
BART will be running normal train service today between Rockridge and Walnut Creek stations following overnight repairs and safety inspections in the area.
