Why do people love the TV show Hawaii 5-O? Is it the exotic location? The catchy Ventures theme song? Or perhaps it’s that distinctive Mercury sedan that was used for years on the series? Yeah, that’s the ticket! And did you know the car still exists? It has floated around car shows in the Midwest since the 1990s.

But evidence points to the vehicle being a hoax.

That’s the premise of Ford expert Adrian Clements in the above video. Adrian talks about the red flags seen on the car, then pulling a Marti Report on the VIN and discovering that the vehicle in question isn’t even the proper model as displayed on the TV show.

In the pilot episode, a 1967 Mercury Marquis was used but, from the first episode through 1973, a triple black 1968 Mercury Brougham four-door hardtop was the star car. The car purported to be the original happens to show an invoice that specifies a Caribbean Blue metallic Park Lane with white vinyl top and aqua interior — quite different from the car on the boob tube.
