SAN MATEO – A 24-year-old woman was arrested Monday night on suspicion of kicking a loss prevention agent at the Hillsdale Shopping Center and later leading police in a pursuit, all while she was accompanied by her 1-year-old child and a 15-year-old relative, police said.

The incident unfolded around 5:40 p.m. at the Macy’s, located at 301 Hillsdale Mall, according to the San Mateo Police Department.

The woman tried to steal cosmetics and clothing by hiding them in the base of a stroller, police said, adding that she surrendered the items when confronted by loss prevention agents.

The agents tried to hold the woman for police, but she kicked one and tried to bite another, according to police. She also had pepper spray, but the agents took it from her.

Officers spotted the woman as she was driving away from the mall and tried to stop her. Police said she did not pull over and instead ran several stop signs and a red light. She also purportedly caused a minor collision when she drove on the wrong side of the road.

Officers ended up calling off the chase after they determined her toddler was likely with her.

Around 6:10 p.m., a Colma police officer spotted the woman, followed her and pulled her over at Geneva and San Jose avenues in San Francisco. Her 1-year-old child and a 15-year-old relative were in the car, according to police.

“Both were with the suspect when she committed the theft from Macy’s and an additional store at Hillsdale Shopping Center, as well as in the vehicle during the pursuit,” police said in a statement.

The woman, identified as a Daly City resident, was arrested and booked into San Mateo County jail on charges of second-degree robbery, evading and child endangerment, police said. Her toddler and the teenage relative were released to other family members.
