OAKLAND — A 24-year-old man suffered a bullet wound to the leg early Thursday after being shot at a homeless encampment not far from Lake Merritt, police said.

The man was in stable condition at a hospital, according to police.

Authorities said they were dispatched to the shooting about 1:20 a.m. at a homeless camp in Peralta Park in the 90 block of East 10th Street. The camp is next to the Kaiser Convention Center and a few blocks from Lake Merritt.

It was not clear immediately if the man who was shot lived at the camp or was visiting someone there.

According to police, the victim told officers he was confronted by a man who apparently did live at the camp. The man told the victim to leave and threatened him with violence if he didn’t. The man then fired multiple times at the victim before he could leave, hitting him once, police said.

A relative gave the wounded man a ride to a hospital.

The gunman fled the camp before officers arrived. Police did not release a detailed description of him.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $5,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3426 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
