Four years after rocking the fast-food chicken world with a fried chicken sandwich, Popeyes is hoping to make a statement with wings.
Starting today, locations nationwide will offer hand-battered, bone-in crispy wings in five flavors for the first time. The move comes after three years of culinary development in the Popeyes test kitchen. And while “crashing the wing party,” the company plans to throw some shade at its competitors. (More on that below.)
The company says bone-in wings are a permanent addition to the menu, not a limited-time offering. They come in orders of six, 12 or 24 pieces.
Three of the sauce flavors are brand new to Popeyes; two have appeared previously on the menu. They are described as:
Honey BBQ Wings (new): Tangy tamarind, sweet honey and smoky molasses.
Roasted Garlic Parmesan Wings (new): Caramelized garlic and parmesan and asiago cheeses.
Signature Hot (new): Popeyes was founded in New Orleans in 1972, so there’s got to be a wing tossed in their signature Cajun hot sauce. But it’s described as having a touch of sweetness.
Ghost Pepper Wings: Marinated in a dry spice blend before breading.
Sweet ‘N Spicy Wings: Marinated, breaded and fried, and then tossed in a sweet and spicy blend of chile, garlic and ginger.
Surprisingly, in a heat-meter rating of the flavors, Popeyes lists the Sweet ‘N Spicy Wings as the hottest of the group, hotter than either the Ghost Pepper or Signature Hot (Cajun) wings. You’ve been warned.
Interested in free wings next week after buying them this week? Starting Monday, Nov. 27, customers who order on the app or website using Popeyes’ new DISScount codes (get it?) will receive a free six-piece order with a $10 minimum purchase.
Who are they — and you — dissing? We’ll let you guess. The “cheeky prompts” are STOPWINGS, NOTTHATWILD, OPENSUNDAY and ONLY1WINGFLVR.
