Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1953 Buick Skylark convertible powered by a 322cid “Nailhead” V8 backed by Buick’s Dynaflow automatic transmission. Features include chrome wire wheels, power steering, power windows, and Buick AM radio. Finished in red with light tan convertible top over a red and white leather interior, this Skylark comes with vehicle documentation, a steering wheel cap engraved with the original owner’s name, body manuals, and clear title.
The Skylark was a special edition in the Roadmaster series marking Buick’s 50 years in business. It, along with the Cadillac Eldorado and Oldsmobile Fiesta, were a trio of specialty convertibles promoted as halo cars for General Motors. Compare a regular Roadmaster with the Skylark and you’ll notice the semi-custom charms of the Skylark, including special trim and lower height. It truly is a chariot among 1950s American cars.
The body was refinished in Mandarin Red (code 78) 20 years ago. Features include wire wheels, special Skylark chrome side trim and medallions, light tan power convertible top, and left-hand side mirror. A walk-around video can be seen below.
A set of chrome Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels is wrapped in wide whitewall bias-ply tires.
The interior is furnished with both front and rear bench seats upholstered in red and white leather. Features include power windows, power steering, Selectronic AM radio, and column-mounted automatic transmission shifter.
The instrument panel consists of a 120-mph speedometer and gauges for the fuel level, coolant temperature, battery, and oil pressure. A clock is mounted on the passenger side of the dashboard. The odometer reads 617 miles, but the true mileage on this vehicle is unknown.
Power is provided by Buick’s new-for-1953 322 “Nailhead” V8 with 188 horsepower. It is backed by Buick’s Dynaflow two-speed automatic transmission.
This Skylark was factory-equipped with an independent front suspension and a solid rear-drive axle. Braking is provided by manual four-wheel drums. A single exhaust system exits at the rear.
