Even if you’re not Catholic, you may be aware there is a holy trinity of hypercars: Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren P1, and Porsche 918 Spyder. The latter two are at a disadvantage because — let’s be honest — they’re not Ferraris. This most righteous of the divine is the LaFerrari, with a very special one-off owned by Sammy Hagar to be auctioned at the 2024 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction on Saturday, January 27th.
“The LaFerrari is one of the most prized vehicles in the eyes of collectors worldwide,” says Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. Ain’t it the truth! The LaFerrari is the most desired of 21st century automobiles, having climbed to the top of the totem pole and then left with no successor. If you want the most covetable Ferrari, only the LaFerrari will do.
And imagine for a moment that, out of the 710 LaFerraris built between 2013-18, how many were built and owned by a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer like Sammy Hagar? The singer whose tenure in Montrose, Van Halen, and his own solo career cemented him in the pantheon of American music history is actually a veteran of the Barrett-Jackson family, having sold his 1967 Shelby GT500 in a past Scottsdale event. He’s a car guy like you and me, but he has the means to achieve his dreams, which led to a visit in Maranello in 2014 to spec out the ultimate.
“He designed a yellow LaFerrari at first, with all the candy,” says Jackson. “But, then, he caught sight of a 1960s Ferrari pictured on the wall at the Maranello factory. That image forced him to go back to the drawing board and settle for something quite simpler and classy,” including carbon fiber and black accents plus a matching interior. There’s no official name that we know of for the color in that vintage photo (luckily, the paint code was listed behind the picture), but Sammy likes to call it “Cappuccino” – a fitting name for an Italian.
The Ferrari that was so special that it was named “The Ferrari” was introduced in 2013 and is part of a lineage that includes the Enzo, F50, F40, and 288 GTO. With pulsating aesthetics, novel powertrain approach (the first hybrid to feature the prancing horse – and a V12 one at that), and Formula 1-inspired features, the LaFerrari quickly climbed to the top echelons of the automotive world as the ultimate expression of what could be done on four wheels. Output from the 6.3-liter V12 was 789 horsepower, but 950 horses was available when combined with the electric motor. The official-62 mph sprint was achieved in 2.9 seconds, a time that only now is being attained by late-model supercars. Ferrari originally planned to build 499 coupes, but one extra was built for a charity cause in in 2016, plus 210 Aperta roadsters were built starting in that very same year.
Sammy’s LaFerrari sports only 1,100 miles (no word how much over 55 mph). It has been serviced at the same San Francisco facility since new. “This is undoubtedly my favorite car I’ve ever owned,” says Hagar. “It’s an incredible machine and I’ve adored it since I took delivery of it in 2015, but the time has come to pass it on to someone else who will hopefully enjoy it as much as I have. It’s a priceless vehicle that is true to the essence of Ferrari – a marque I’ve loved for a long time. I look forward to being there when it crosses the auction block in January, and together with Craig and the Barrett-Jackson team, we’re going to make it a party for the ages!”
Sammy’s headlining 2015 LaFerrari will be the feature car of the 2024 Salon Supercar Collection. Collectors and enthusiasts interested in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity on January 27th can register to bid here. Those interested in being a part of the celebration by consigning their own collector car may do so here .
“It’s an honor he’s chosen to auction this incredible automotive work of genius at our upcoming event in January. Representing a true once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a piece of automotive and rock and roll history, collectors won’t want to miss this,” says Jackson.
