Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1974 Volkswagen Type 2 Westfalia Camper.
This 50-year-old bus is a party on wheels! Just get a glimpse of the retro-themed shag carpeting in the rear passenger compartment. Best of all, it offers accommodations for an overnight stay wherever you feel like parking. This versatile VW is being offered by a dealer in Houston, Texas, and the auction ends this Tuesday.
The “Type 2” was classified as a light commercial vehicle and is equally as renowned as its Volkswagen sibling, the Beetle (which incidentally went by “Type 1”). Its origins date back to 1949, and in some markets, it remains in production even today. Depending on the region, the Type 2 has been marketed as a Transporter, a Kombi, or a Microbus. And thanks to a partnership with Westfalia, some units were even customized as campers.
Versatility is the name of the game with this ride. One might say the theme is “business in the front, and party in the back.” The front passenger compartment is tidy with plaid bucket seats and straightforward controls. The rear is where things get interesting with tri-tone shag carpeting, wood cabinets, bed cushions, a pop-up ceiling, and available power outlets. This would be the ultimate cruiser for an overnight trip or a tailgating home base. The pop-up fiberglass camper top is hinged for additional head room. That same space allows for an additional bunk bed, too.
Power comes from a rear-mounted, air-cooled 1.8-liter flat-four mated to a four-speed manual transaxle. While the five-digit odometer reads 28,582 miles, true mileage on the chassis is not known. The dealer’s video gives a closer look at the vehicle’s exterior, interior, engine bay, lighting, and driving dynamics.
Whether you wish to drive, dine, lounge, or sleep, this Type 2 brings a lot to the table. There are clubs around the world dedicated to the Type 2, and the sense of community with these is strong. The only thing left to do is track down a velour leisure suit to go with the retro aesthetic.
