A Maryland man is accused of assaulting a 10-year-old who was trick-or-treating on Halloween and then pulling a gun on her mother after following her home, according to police.
Anne Arundel County Police said that the girl told them the man licked her ear after she went to his door for trick-or-treating in Severn in central Maryland.
Marc Limansky, the public information officer for the Anne Arundel County Police Dept., said that the man leaned down toward the girl, took out his teeth, and then nibbled on her ear.
When she fled to her mother’s home, he allegedly followed after her and tried to push his way into the home. The mother told police that when she pushed him out of the home, he allegedly pulled out a gun and pulled the trigger.
“The gun, thankfully, did not go off,” said Limansky.
Police arrested 66-year-old Cedrick Paines at his home where they executed a search warrant and found two handguns, a shotgun, a rifle, and ammunition. He was later released on a $5,000 bond.
Paines denied the allegations to several reporters.
He told WJZ-TV that he was just trying to tell the girl a secret.
When he spoke to WBAL-TV, he gave a different explanation.
“No, let me tell you something, she was sitting there and I was sitting here, and then she got up and I said, uh, ‘boo!’ And she ran over there, and I ran over there, and I was gonna tell her mother, I didn’t do nothing, I didn’t touch her,” Paines said.
“I do the same joke with my grandson, he jumps every time!” he added.
He went on to say that he didn’t pull a gun on anyone.
Paines is facing charges of first-degree assault and weapons violations, although police said he was not prohibited from owning guns or ammunitions at the time of the alleged assault.
