RICHMOND — A man running across Interstate 580 Wednesday night after his vehicle was involved in another crash died after he was hit by three other vehicles, the California Highway Patrol said Thursday.

The man has not yet been identified.

The fatality happened about 10:25 p.m. Wednesday in the westbound lanes of the freeway near Central Avenue.

The CHP said the man was involved in a five-vehicle crash that happened in the eastbound lanes. One person was injured in that incident.

The unidentified man got out of his vehicle and ran into the westbound lanes, where he was first hit by one vehicle and then two others, CHP Officer Adib Zeid said.

He died on the freeway.

Zeid said the drivers who hit the man and those involved in the crash in the eastbound lanes all remained at the scene.

All lanes of I-580 in both directions were closed for about 30 minutes while officers investigated and the area was cleaned up.

Anyone with information about the death is asked to call the Oakland CHP office at 510-457-2875 and ask for Officer Vega.
