De La Salle will play a football game on Friday, after all.

One day after Foothill canceled its game against the Spartans because of injuries and sickness, De La Salle found another opponent: El Cerrito.

The Spartans — ranked second by the Bay Area News Group — will play host to sixth-ranked El Cerrito on Friday night in Concord.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Hercules called off its game against El Cerrito.

The game on Friday will be the first meeting between De La Salle and El Cerrito since 1992, a DLS victory, the program’s fourth in what became a national-record 151-game winning streak.

“Immense excitement (and) gratitude for kids on both teams,” DLS coach Justin Alumbaugh wrote in a text to the Bay Area News Group. “They all deserve it.”

On Tuesday, Alumbaugh wasn’t optimistic that his team would find another opponent after Foothill notified DLS that it wouldn’t play this weekend.

Foothill coach Greg Haubner told the Bay Area News Group on Tuesday that he had about 25-27 healthy players, down from 44 to start the season.

Both Foothill and Hercules are 1-6.

El Cerrito is 7-0 and is coming off a 47-0 victory over Pinole Valley last week.

“I agree with Coach Alumbaugh’s ‘immense excitement for both teams.’ We are grateful for an opportunity to play this Friday,” El Cerrito coach Jacob Rincon wrote in a text.

DLS (5-2) has won five consecutive games since losing to Orange Lutheran and Serra to open the season.

Last week, the Spartans squandered a late 15-point lead before beating third-ranked San Ramon Valley 33-27 in overtime.
