SAN MATEO – A 20-year-old Redwood City man was arrested on suspicion of attacking another man with a baseball bat Thursday in San Mateo, according to authorities.

The victim was walking on North Railroad Avenue near Tilton Avenue around 5:25 p.m. when he was “suddenly attacked” by the suspect, the San Mateo Police Department said in a statement.

The suspect punched the victim and hit him on the head with a baseball bat, police said. Following the alleged assault, the suspect drove away form the scene in a red Jeep.

The victim managed to contact authorities, who arrived to find him with a cut on his head and bleeding from the mouth. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Officers obtained a description of the suspect and identified him as Alfredo PrietoMartinez. He was later found near the Jeep in Redwood City and arrested, police said.

PrietoMartinez was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and battery with serious bodily injury. He is being held on $35,000 bail, according to jail records.
