During an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania said that the nation is “not sending their best and brightest” to serve in Congress.
He went on to describe it as “scary” that such people are making decisions about the government.
Fetterman made the comments while clad in shorts and a hoodie.
The RNC Research X account shared the video clip, writing, “John Fetterman, completely unironically: ‘America is not sending their best and brightest, you know, to Washington, D.C.'”
People pounced on the lawmaker’s comment.
“Does he own a mirror,” Libs of TikTok founder Chaya Raichik tweeted.
“Fetterman speaks truth. He’s unaware of it, but he embodies the very truth he speaks. This could have been a skit on SNL. But it was a rare funny moment on Colbert,” former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee opined.
“Both comedy and irony are dead,” Robert Malone wrote.
“No s***, John?” BlazeTV host Sara Gonzales tweeted.
“Not sending their best dressed, either!” Anya Parampil declared.
Fetterman’s communications director, Joe Calvello, responded to the RNC Research account’s post by writing, “Yes, he’s talking about your dumb***”
Fetterman himself responded to the RNC Research post by sharing a gif that reads, “THAT’S THE JOKE.”
Fetterman, who entered office in early January, checked in to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in February to be treated for clinical depression and was discharged more than a month later.
The politician suffered a stroke last year shortly before winning his Democratic U.S. Senate primary.
