Today we look at a ClassicCars TV feature of a 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E. The W124 generation of Mercedes-Benz models set the standard for mid-size luxury sedans, and a high-performance version built in conjunction with Porsche set the standard once again. Mercedes opted for the 322 horsepower 5.0-liter V8 from the SL, which was too wide for the frame rails and the assembly line, so Mercedes commissioned Porsche to engineer and build the 500E in an idle factory where the 959 was produced. As such, all 1991-94 500Es featured flared body panels. At the 2023 Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach Auction, this 1992 500E sold for $40,700.
