RODEO — A toddler drowned in a bathtub here on Monday evening and two adults are in custody facing allegations of torture and homicide, authorities said Tuesday.

The Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office says the 2-year-old was pronounced dead at about 8:50 p.m. Monday after deputies were called to a home on the 300 block of California Street for a report of a drowning.

Deputies later arrested Destiny Deboe, 22, and Tyshawn Haywood, 21, on suspicion of homicide, torture and felony infliction of injury to a child, sheriff’s office spokesperson Jimmy Lee said.

Authorities did not release the toddler’s identity. Deputies and fire personnel who responded to the home in unincorporated West Contra Costa tried to save the child but were unsuccessful, Lee said.

Deboe and Haywood were in custody Tuesday night at the Martinez Detention Facility in lieu of $1.07 million bail, according to jail records.

Lee said the case remains under investigation. It is the sixth homicide investigated by the sheriff’s office this year.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
