After being ousted from the House speakership slot earier on Tuesday, GOP Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California announced that he will not seek the role again. McCarthy had won the speakership earlier this year after a whopping 15 rounds of balloting.

“My fear is the institution fell today,” McCarthy said.

Eight GOP lawmakers joined with 208 Democrats to vote in favor of ousting McCarthy. While zero Democrats voted against removing McCarthy as speaker, 210 Republicans voted against yanking McCarthy out of the role.

The eight Republicans who supported the McCarthy ouster included and GOP Reps. Andy Biggs of Arizona, Ken Buck of Colorado, Tim Burchett of Tennessee, Eli Crane of Arizona, Bob Good of Virginia, Nancy Mace of South Carolina, Matt Rosendale of Montana, Matt Gaetz of Florida, who instigated the move to oust McCarthy from the speakership.

Now the House will need to tap a new speaker.

GOP Rep. Troy Nehls of Texas has suggested choosing former President Donald Trump for the role. “I nominate Donald J. Trump for Speaker of the House,” Nehls tweeted.

BlazeTV host Steve Deace has floated the idea of GOP Rep. Chip Roy of Texas for speaker. “I nominate @chiproytx for Speaker. A man of conviction and integrity, yes, but as a former senate staffer also understands the legislative process. It is time to govern and not just disrupt. Finally, he knows how to message effectively with passion — a must in this media era.”
