San Leandro police on Friday said that two men had been fatally shot in the same fitness-center parking lot roughly 10 days apart.
The names, ages and residences of the men were not released.
In an online alert posted Friday, police said both shootings happened in the parking lot of the 24-Hour Fitness at Bayfair Center, a large shopping complex.
Asked by a Bay Area News Group reporter why the disclosure of the homicides took more than two weeks in the first case and five days in the second, a police spokesperson said that “there was enough information to cast some doubt on the certainty” of the first death actually being a homicide. After the second death, the spokesperson said, “the determination was made that information should be released.
“The timing and content were determined after discussions between investigators and command staff to properly balance public safety/interest and investigational needs,” according to the statement from Lt. Enguang Teng.
Police said the first homicide happened about 11:50 a.m. Sept. 14.
Officers responded to ascertain the welfare of an unconscious male and located him inside of a vehicle, suffering from what appeared to be a single gunshot wound, according to the alert.
The second homicide was reported on September 24th, around 10:40 a.m. Responding officers located a deceased man inside of a vehicle, suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds, the alert says.
Police did not specify any possible motive in the killings. Authorities said Investigators were looking into the possibility that they were random acts or potentially connected with each other.
