SAN LEANDRO – A man shot and killed a woman during a domestic dispute Wednesday morning in unincorporated San Leandro, authorities said.

The dispute was reported around 9:30 a.m. at an apartment in the 16000 block of Foothill Boulevard, said Lt. Tya Modeste of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies, including those with crisis intervention training, arrived at the scene and tried to make contact with the occupants of the apartment, Modeste said. During a phone call, deputies heard yelling in the background and determined they needed to enter the apartment.

As deputies were preparing to enter the apartment, they heard what sounded like a gunshot, Modeste said. A man in his 50s then left the apartment and surrendered to deputies.

Deputies found a woman dead inside the apartment. A gun was also recovered. No one else was inside the apartment.

Modeste said the man and the woman appeared to be in a dating relationship at the time of the shooting.

It was not immediately known if law enforcement had been called to the apartment previously.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
