OAKLAND — A 28-year-old man was fatally shot in West Oakland Friday night, authorities said.

The man’s name has not been released. Police said he was an Oakland resident, but did not say if he lived in the residential area where the shooting occurred. The shooting happened around 9:45 p.m. Friday, near the intersection of 8th St. and Filbert St.

Officers found the man outside. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Police have not yet released a motive for the killing, and no arrests have been made.

The killing is the 84th homicide investigated by Oakland police in 2023. Last year at this time, police had investigated 87 homicides in the city.

Oakland has seen three straight years of triple-digit homicides, hitting a 15-year high in 2021 of 134 before dipping to 120 in 2022.
