Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis raised eyebrows by claiming in a social media post that “[a]bortion access is holy and life-honoring.”
Lewis, who indicates on her X profile that she is the senior minister at Middle Collegiate Church, drew backlash on social media after making the appalling assertion.
“Well this is just insane,” Mary Margaret Olohan of the Daily Signal remarked in response to Lewis’ tweet.
“So do you believe that human beings would maximize our holiness and closeness to God if *every* pregnancy ended in an induced abortion?” wrote Delano Squires, a contributor to BlazeTV’s “Fearless with Jason Whitlock.”
“Demented thread, notable for being a perfect balance between evil and idiocy,” someone else wrote.
Lewis’ shocking claim was just the first in a series of tweets on the subject of abortion.
“Forcing people to give birth reveals such little respect for life and the wellbeing of everyone involved,” Lewis wrote.
While abortion is the taking of an unborn child’s life, Lewis said that forcing women to give birth to unwanted children “harms many children who are born.”
“It harms folks who are forced to have a child against their wishes. Not to mention the folks who desperately need abortion care for medical crises,” she wrote.
“It harms doctors and the entire medical profession, forcing them to violate their vows by offering substandard care—making them second-guess decisions under threat of incarceration,” she added.
“And it harms many children who are born—dropping them into family systems where parents do not want children, or simply do not have the material means to care for them well in a country that’s simultaneously slashing every safety net,” she asserted.
“God calls us to create abundant life for everyone. That demands honoring people’s agency to choose whether they bring new life into the world. Abortion bans violate essential religious freedom. And they treat human beings like talking points, not folks made in God’s image,” Lewis concluded.
According to Middle Church’s website, Lewis is the “Senior Minister for Public Theology and Transformation.”
“Middle Church is where therapy meets Broadway; where art and dance meet a gospel revival; where old time religion gets a new twist. We are Bach, Beatles, and Beethoven; we are jazz, hip-hop, and spirituals,” the church’s website states.
