Ohio police arrested a man after a lethal shooting at a Labor Day celebration where a pregnant woman, her unborn child, and her husband were killed.
Maple Heights Police Chief Todd Hansen told WOIO-TV that the lethal shooting in Garfield Heights appeared to be the result of a long-standing family feud.
Investigators said that 29-year-old Jason Iverson arrived at Stafford Park, where families and church groups were celebrating the holiday, when he saw some members of his family and immediately got into a physical fight with them.
Iverson’s 30-year-old, pregnant sister, Mercedes Iverson, and her 31-year-old husband, Norbert Carter, tried to disengage from the fight, according to police.
Jason Iverson allegedly followed them to their car in a parking lot and began shooting at his sister, who was struck and killed along with her unborn baby.
Carter tried to escape, but police say Iverson hunted him down and shot him in a bathroom, killing him as well.
A 13-year-old juvenile was also grazed by a bullet, said police, and the child was treated at a hospital before being released.
“I think the juvenile was just hit by chance,” said Hansen. “I don’t think the juvenile was targeted, he just happened to be close to the female.”
The police chief said, with the help of several witnesses at the park, officers were able to quickly find and arrest Iverson after the shooting. Iverson was charged with murder and attempted murder.
“This incident was specifically between the shooter and the victims; there was no randomness to the event. The scene was rendered safe very quickly with the apprehension of the shooter,” said Hansen.
Garfield Heights is a suburb of Cleveland with a population of about 30,000 residents.
