OAKLEY — A man riding a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle on a city street was killed Tuesday morning in a collision with a pickup truck, authorities said.
The name of the man killed, who police said was a 22-year-old Antioch resident, was not immediately released. The driver of the truck was hospitalized.
The collision happened just before 7 a.m. Tuesday in the 5200 block of Neroly Road near Elm Lane.
Police said initial reports indicated the ATV — a four-wheeled vehicle often used offroad — was going southbound on Neroly Road when the rider lost control of the vehicle and entered a locked-wheel skid that brought him into the northbound lane.
The ATV struck the front corner of an oncoming pickup truck, sending the ATV and the rider back across the southbound lane of Neroly Road and into an adjacent field.
The rider was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the truck was taken to a hospital to be treated for complaints of pain, police said.
Police did not say if the ATV rider was wearing a helmet. Under state law, it is illegal to drive an ATV on public roadways.
Neroly Road was closed for several hours while police investigated.
