A registered sex offender is accused of allegedly beating his elderly neighbor and throwing him from a third story window.
The harrowing incident unfolded in Rochester, New York, when police were called to the corner of Genesee Street and Sawyer Street at about 6 a.m. on Thursday.
They discovered the body of 65-year-old Angel Lopez in front of a corner store called the Destiny Mart.
Investigators determined that Lopez had been attacked by 38-year-old Damien Young at about 3 a.m. in the third story of the apartment building. Both Lopez and Young lived at the apartment building, according to police.
Young beat Lopez into a semi-conscious state and then threw him out of the third story window, Rochester Police said. They believe the victim hit a second-floor fire escape then fell to the pavement where he died from his injuries.
News photographs from the scene showed a firetruck with its ladder extended to the top of the building above a blue tarp where the victim’s body was found.
Police arrested Young and charged with murder in the second degree. He was admitted to Rochester General Hospital under the Mental Hygiene Law but later discharged.
Young has pleaded not guilty and claimed self defense. He requested to represent himself but a judge denied the request. Young is being held in the Monroe County Jail without bail.
Investigators said that Young is a registered Level 2 sex offender and served a prison sentence after being convicted of attempted abuse in 2006.
Police have been unable to contact any relatives of the victim and are asking for help from the public about the incident.
