Former President Donald Trump garnered tens of millions of views in his interview with Tucker Carlson that was scheduled to compete with the Republican presidential primary debate on Fox News.
The interview with the former president was released just minutes before the debate began, and after only two hours, it had racked up 80 million views.
Trump has faced criticism for refusing to debate against his opponents in the first debate moderated by Fox News anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum. He explained in the interview with Carlson why he chose to skip the debate.
“You see the polls have come out, I’m leading by 50 and 60 points,” Trump said.
“And some of them are at one and zero and two. And I’m saying, ‘Do I sit there for an hour or two hours, whatever it’s going to be, and get harassed by people that shouldn’t even be running for president? Should I be doing that?” he added. “And a network that isn’t particularly friendly, frankly.'”
Carlson also asked Trump whether he thought the country was headed to a civil war.
“There’s a level of passion that I’ve never seen, there’s a level of hatred that I’ve never seen, and that’s probably a bad combination,” he responded.

Trump also said during the interview that there was a chance Democrats might assassinate him if he won the presidency again.
“They are savage animals. They are people that are sick. Really sick. You have great people in the Democrat Party, great people that are Democrats,” Trump said. “But I’ve seen what they do, I’ve seen the lengths that they go to.”
Both Carlson and Trump have issued acidic rhetorical attacks against Fox News, the former after he left the news outlet and the latter all throughout his campaigns and first presidential term. Carlson has been publishing a new version of his show to Twitter, which has been rebranded as X by Elon Musk.
