SANTA CLARA — A Caltrain hit and killed a pedestrian Saturday morning just north of the Santa Clara station, officials said.
The collision involving southbound train No. 630 occurred around 11 a.m., according to Caltrain spokesperson Tasha Bartholomew.
Train service was temporarily stopped as emergency responders arrived near the station, located at 1001 Railroad Ave.. Transit police reopened the northbound track for slow-moving trains shortly after 11:30 a.m.
The southbound track was expected to remain closed through most of Saturday afternoon, but Bartholomew said the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority was providing mutual aid and honoring tickets of Caltrain passengers headed towards the San Jose Diridon station.
Saturday’s fatality was Caltrain’s sixth so far in 2023, Bartholomew said in an email. No injuries were reported for the 12 passengers aboard the train.
Transit police were investigating the fatal collision. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will determine the pedestrian’s cause of death, as well as release their identity once it is confirmed and their next of kin is notified.
