Surveillance video captured the shocking moment a car thief pulled over to the side of the road to abandon a baby in a car seat who was in the truck he had stolen moments previously.
Boston police said they were called by a family to a report of a kidnapping at about 3 p.m. on Friday at the intersection of Geneva Avenue and Leroy Street in Dorchester.
The family had pulled over in order to tend to their 2-year-old child when a man rode up to the truck on a bicycle and drove away with the child still in the vehicle, according to surveillance video viewed by police.
Police searched for a heavy-set, Hispanic, light-skinned male with a beard and long hair. He was wearing a gray shirt with gray pants at the time.
Surveillance video obtained by WHDH-TV showed the alleged thief return moments later in the stolen truck and drop off the baby and a car seat. Someone on the street grabbed the carrier as the truck was driven away.
The baby was reunited with the family and was medically evaluated after being transported to a hospital. The stolen truck was located later on Columbia Road.
Police are asking for help from the public to identify the suspect. They released photographs that were enhanced and added that he was wearing a Boston Red Sox T-shirt and had tattoos on both arms.
One resident told WHDH that he had seen a marked increase in muggings and carjackings in the neighborhood.
“Everywhere you go, you just got to look back, you know, and it’s bad,” said Jose Cruz. “There’s no intervention, police intervention unless something happens, that’s when they come around.”
