A photo shows former University of Pennsylvania swimmer Lia Thomas wearing a tank top that bears text that reads “ANTIFA SUPER SOLDIER.”
Thomas, a biological male who identifies as a woman, previously made waves by winning various races while swimming against women.
“Doesn’t this make so much make sense…. I haven’t specifically bashed Lia Thomas on anything (other than calling him an entitled narcissist which I stand by) because ultimately he was following the rules in place. But this is disturbing,” former University of Kentucky swimmer Riley Gaines tweeted in response to a tweet containing the photo of Thomas.
In 2022, Gaines and Thomas tied for fifth place in the NCAA Women’s Championships 200 freestyle final, according to swimmingworldmagazine.com.
When Thomas won the 500 free at the 2022 NCAA Championships, pennathletics.com described him as “the first Quaker female swimmer to win an NCAA individual title.”
“Lia Thomas is not a brave, courageous woman who EARNED a national title. He is an arrogant, cheat who STOLE a national title from a hardworking, deserving woman. The @ncaa is responsible,” Gaines tweeted earlier this year.
Debate continues to rage over whether biological men who identify as women should be allowed to compete in women’s sports.
“The very simple answer is that I’m not a man,” Thomas said, according to a 2022 Sports Illustrated piece. “I’m a woman, so I belong on the women’s team. Trans people deserve that same respect every other athlete gets.”
