A stunning video captured the moment Michigan police busted down the door to a residence and rescued a 2-year-old being allegedly held underwater in a tub by her mother.
The harrowing incident unfolded on Saturday at about 10:30 in the morning at the 35-year-old woman’s home in the city of Albion, a small city 100 miles west of Detroit.
Albion police said that a 15-year-old girl had called them to report that her mother was trying to kill her siblings. Police said that children could be heard crying in the background of the call.
The body camera video showed police respond to the residence and break down the door to the bathroom. Inside, they saw the mother holding her daughter under water in the bathtub.
Officers said the child wasn’t breathing when they pulled the child out of the room and give her CPR to revive her. A later scene shows the child crying after being resuscitated.
Police said that the girl also had stab wounds in her chest and throat and had possibly been forced to drink cleaning fluid. The woman’s 4-year-old son had also been cut, and they believe he had been forced to swallow cleaning fluid as well.
The two children were flown to a hospital in Ann Arbor and will recover, officials said.
The teenage daughter and another child, an 8-year-old son, didn’t appear to be harmed, but police believe the mother drank cleaning fluid as well.
The woman was arraigned on charges of assault with intent to murder and child abuse, and her bond was set at $500,000. She was also ordered to undergo a mental health assessment.
Police said they had been to the home several times on calls where the woman had been a victim of domestic violence. They said that this was the first call they had to the home where she was the alleged perpetrator.
