The Boston Red Sox placed outfielder Alex Verdugo on the bereavement list and catcher Reese McGuire on the 10-day injured list Thursday.
Verdugo, 27, is 20-for-53 (.377) during a 12-game hitting streak. He is batting .303 with five homers and 31 RBIs in 71 games this season.
He is hitting .289 with 49 homers and 232 RBIs in 580 career games with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2017-19) and Red Sox.
McGuire suffered a right oblique strain while swinging the bat in the sixth inning and exited Wednesday’s game against the host Minnesota Twins. He was replaced by Connor Wong.
McGuire, 28, is hitting .267 with 11 RBIs in 40 games this season. He is batting .258 with 12 homers and 59 RBIs in 270 career games with the Toronto Blue Jays (2018-21), Chicago White Sox (2022) and Red Sox.
In other moves Thursday, the Red Sox recalled catcher Caleb Hamilton and left-hander Brandon Walter from Triple-A Worcester and acquired right-hander Taylor Scott from the Los Angeles Dodgers for cash considerations. The team also transferred infielder Yu Chang and right-hander John Schreiber to the 60-day injured list.
Hamilton, 28, is batting .180 with three homers and 13 RBIs in 30 games this season with Worcester.
Walter, 26, is 1-5 with a 6.28 ERA in 13 games (12 starts) this season with Worcester. He allowed three earned runs and six hits in 6⅔ innings during Boston’s 6-0 loss to Minnesota on Thursday in his major league debut.
“I was just trying to keep us in the game, give us length, save the other bullpen guys, and try to get quick innings,” Walter said. “I was able to do that some innings, other innings kind of got away from me, but overall, pretty good.”
The Red Sox protected Walter from the Rule 5 draft after adding him to the team’s 40-man roster in November.
Scott, 31, has allowed six runs in six innings this season for Los Angeles.
