As we embrace the summer season and enjoy the sunny days in Saratoga, I wanted to take a moment to share some important tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe. Saratoga has remained one of the safest cities in California, thanks to the vigilance and collaboration of our residents, the sheriff’s office and the city. Safety is our top priority, and by staying informed and taking a few simple precautions, we can have a summer filled with fun, laughter and peace of mind.
If you haven’t already, I encourage you to get involved with your Neighborhood Watch group or establish a group in your neighborhood. Neighborhood Watch encourages us to connect with our neighbors, become familiar with our surroundings and look out for each other. By spotting and reporting any suspicious activities to 911, we can provide law enforcement with vital information that may prevent a crime or lead to an arrest.
Consider installing a monitored alarm system that directly alerts the sheriff’s office when triggered. Also, ensure your alarm system can detect open or broken doors and windows. An emerging trend in residential burglaries involves criminals bypassing alarms by breaking through sliding glass doors. Stay a step ahead by installing “glass break” alarms.
Always lock and close all windows, doors and gates, both when you’re leaving home and overnight. Avoid leaving spare keys in obvious places, such as under doormats or flowerpots.
Avoid storing valuable items in the master bedroom, as it is often the first place burglars check. Consider using a safety deposit box at a bank for expensive and irreplaceable items. Create an inventory of your valuables, including serial numbers and photos, and mark them with your phone number to aid in recovery if stolen.
If you’re planning a trip, let the sheriff’s office know by submitting a patrol check request. They can have a deputy stop by your home, and you can also ask your neighbors to keep an eye on your property. Remember to stop mail and newspaper delivery and use timers to turn on lights at night, giving the illusion that someone is home. Lastly, be cautious about sharing travel plans on social media.
The sheriff’s office also offers a complimentary home security check. Email SHF.WVAdmin@shf.sccgov.org to request one and ensure your property is secure.
Remember, in case of an emergency, always dial 911. To report suspicious activities or non-emergency events, call the sheriff’s office non-emergency line at 408-299-2311.
Whether you’re heading to a beach, lake, or pool, it’s crucial to prioritize water safety. Ensure young children are always supervised by an adult while in or near the water. If you have a pool at home, install barriers such as fences and pool covers to prevent unsupervised access. Teach children basic swimming skills and water safety rules.
Whether you’re lounging by the pool, playing at a Saratoga park or engaging in other outdoor activities, it’s crucial to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Carry a water bottle with you and encourage children to do the same. Remember, even if you don’t feel thirsty, your body still needs fluids to function optimally. You should also protect your skin from harmful UV rays with SPF, and remember to reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
Let’s make this summer a time of joy, relaxation and safety for our entire community. By working together and staying vigilant, we can ensure that Saratoga remains a wonderful place to live, work and play.
