Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1987 Chevrolet Corvette Z52 coupe.
I can still remember the first time I saw a C4 Corvette in person. It was 1984 and I was a senior in high school. My friend Joe’s dad had just bought one and, being obviously insane, let his son drive it to school. We all took the car out that day to see what it could do. It was equipped with the Z51 handling package, and I had never been in a car that even approached the handling capabilities of that car. The styling was while still obviously a Corvette, but it was also modern in every way. I loved the car’s well designed leather seats and the digital dash was straight from the movie Tron. In essence, we thought it was the coolest car any of had ever seen from the U.S.
The AutoHunter Spotlight for the day is one of these cars, a later version 1987 C4 Corvette that features a ton of upgrades from the original 1984 launch model. These included better body mounts, a more powerful V8 engine with Tuned Port Fuel Injection replacing the problematic GM Crossfire system (called “Misfire Injection” by many owners), and a slightly softened (yet still excellent) Z52 suspension.
The auction listing describes this 1987 Corvette as a car that has covered only 9,616 miles since new. Power is supplied by an L98 350ci V8 equipped with the aforementioned Tuned Port Injection and backed by a four-speed automatic transmission. Power features include the windows, steering, brakes, seats, locks, mirrors, and rear hatch release.
Additional features include the Z52 Sport Handling Package, a removable roof panel, a tilt steering column, the awesome looking digital gauges, air conditioning, new Delco/Bilstein shocks, and Hankook tires.
It is painted in its original Bright Red exterior over a red leather interior, and this C4 Corvette comes with a clean CARFAX report and a clear title in the seller’s name.
The seller states that all fluids, except for the brake fluid, were changed in April 2023 and a tune-up was recently completed.
To me, this car represents the best version of the original C4 Corvette and is in excellent low mile example along with completely original condition. Basically, it is a brand new 1987 Corvette that has all the options you could want. The only change I would make would be to equip this car with a better set of tires.
Of all the collector sports cars on the market, there is simply no car that offers the bang for the buck that the C4 Corvette delivers. It is an iconic American sportscar from the RADwood era that is likely to gather many awards at shows such as Bloomington Gold and Corvettes at Carlisle.
The auction for this 1987 Chevrolet Corvette ends on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at 12:45 p.m. (PDT)
