OAKLAND — A 6-year-old boy was wounded in the leg by stray bullets Friday night when a shooting erupted at an East Oakland gas station, authorities said.
The shooting happened two hours before a man was shot at a street memorial for a recent homicide victim.
The boy was shot about 9:20 p.m. Friday at a Kwik Serv gas station at 22nd Avenue and East 12th Street, police said.
Authorities said the boy’s father had stopped at the station for gas. The boy’s 3-year-old sister was also in the vehicle, authorities said.
Police said that gunshots were suddenly fired at the station, apparently by more than one gunman trying to shoot another person there.
Authorities said the boy was hit multiple times in his leg by stray bullets. His father drove him to a hospital where he was in stable condition Saturday. The father and little girl were not injured.
Authorities said the suspects and intended target fled before police got to the gas station. A motive for the shooting is under investigation and no arrests have been made.
The other, unrelated shooting happened about 11:07 p.m. Friday in the 1700 block of 13th Avenue where an outdoor street memorial has been set up for a 56-year-old man fatally shot there June 5 in a still unsolved killing.
A 54-year-old man, who told police he is a cousin of the man killed June 5, said he was lighting a candle for his cousin when he heard gunshots and realized he had been wounded. He got a ride to a hospital from another person and was in stable condition.
It was not clear if anyone else was at the site when the shooting happened. A motive for the shooting is under investigation and no arrests have been made.
The two shootings were part of violence in different areas of the city Friday night and early Saturday. A man was fatally shot and another man fatally stabbed within 15 minutes early Saturday and a woman was killed by a hit-and-run driver Friday night.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $7,500 in reward money in the shooting of the boy and up to $5,000 in the man’s shooting for information leading to the arrests of the suspects. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3426 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
