The Chevrolet El Camino debuted in 1959, a response to the Ford Ranchero that has been available since the 1957 model year. But GMC didn’t get into the act until 1971. One of those vehicles, a 1971 GMC Sprint pickup, is featured on AutoHunter, the online platform driven by ClassicCars.com. This particular vehicle is powered by a 350ci V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission. Features include air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, and Rally wheels. Finished in Red over a black vinyl interior, this 1971 GMC Sprint includes service records and a clear title.
The GMC Sprint was available from 1971-77, available in standard configuration and as the more upscale Custom trim level. A special SP version of the Sprint Custom was the equivalent to the El Camino SS, though the SS was discontinued for 1974 while the SP continued through 1977. Starting in 1978, the Caballero took over where the Sprint left off, lasting through 1987 when General Motors discontinued the RWD mid-size platform.
Under prior ownership, the original Bright Blue hue (code 26) was replaced with Red, plus the SP’s special domed hood with dual black hood stripes was added. Additional features include driver-side mirror, newer stainless steel side moldings, and bright bed rail caps.
Fifteen-inch Rally wheels with polished trim rings and center caps are wrapped in 235/70 Summit Radial Trac GT white-letter tires.
The interior features a black vinyl bench seat and also includes power steering, aftermarket AM/FM radio with equalizer, and air conditioning.
Instrumentation includes the round gauge cluster from the SP package, which features a 120-mph speedometer, clock, fuel gauge, and warning lights for the coolant temperature, voltage, and oil pressure. A set of Sunpro gauges are mounted under the dashboard. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 83,583 miles, though the true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
The Invader 350cid V8 works in tandem with a column-shifted three-speed automatic transmission. The engine bay features an upgraded aluminum radiator.
