Mountain View police arrested a 16-year-old from San Jose on Tuesday after he allegedly carjacked a vehicle at knifepoint, crashed the vehicle and attempted to escape officers while on foot, according to authorities.

A Mountain View patrol officer attempted to perform a traffic stop on a Toyota sedan traveling at a high rate of speed around 5:40 a.m. Tuesday on westbound Central Expressway, police said in a news release. The driver turned onto Shoreline Boulevard when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a wall.

The driver exited the crashed car and took off on foot. Officers quickly found the suspect in an apartment building, police said.

According to authorities, an investigation revealed that the suspect, a 16-year-old boy from San Jose, carjacked the Toyota at knifepoint in what police called a neighboring city. Police didn’t specify the city the carjacking took place in.
