Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this custom 1941 Mercury convertible. It was once owned by Don Miller, NASCAR legend and former President of Penske Racing South. The big Merc is powered by a 350ci Chevrolet V8 backed by a TH350 automatic transmission. Features include Mustang II-based independent front suspension, chopped folding convertible top and AM/FM/cassette stereo. Finished in maroon with red and white custom vinyl interior, this Mercury comes from the selling dealer with a clear North Carolina title.
According to Don Miller, this car was customized in Ohio in 1959-1960 by Bax Brown. The exterior was refinished in Honduras Maroon over 30 years ago. Features include chopped windshield frame with a V-butt windshield, frenched headlights, shaved hood and trunklid, fender-mounted antenna, dual rearview mirrors and electric spotlights, folding tan convertible top and color-matched rear fender skirts.
A set of red steel wheels with 1955 Lincoln front wheel covers is wrapped in whitewall radial tires.
The power split front bench seat and the rest of the cockpit are upholstered in red and white pleated vinyl. Features include power windows and steering, tilt steering column, air conditioning, rear air shocks adjustment switch and column-shift automatic transmission.
The instrument panel consists of a 110-mph speedometer and gauges for the fuel level, temperature, amps and oil pressure. An additional set of gauges that includes a 160-mph speedometer and gauges for the coolant temperature and oil pressure are located under the dashboard. The selling dealer states that the odometer reads 60,601 miles but the true mileage on this vehicle is unknown.
Power is provided by a 350ci Chevrolet small-block backed by a TH350 three-speed automatic transmission. Engine bay features include finned-aluminum valve covers with Cadillac emblems, aluminum intake manifold, four-barrel carburetor, Mallory electronic ignition, and maroon and chrome batwing air cleaner.
Underneath, this custom Mercury features a Fat Man Fabrications independent front suspension, power rack-and-pinion steering and 1960 Thunderbird nine-inch rear axle with 3.50 gears. Braking is provided by power front discs and rear drums. A dual exhaust system with glasspack mufflers exits at the rear.
