The purpose of advertising is to persuade. How companies have persuaded us to consider their automobiles has evolved over time, going from brand identity to brand image to “sell the sizzle, not the steak” and beyond.
In the fourth episode of Drive the Bid, Derek Shiekhi, “Jalopy Jeff” Sutton and I discussed some of our favorite ads, which include Jordan, Auburn, Porsche, Range Rover and more. Not only are they studies in headlines, copy and layouts, but also they demonstrate the evolution of how products were advertised in different eras.
What car ads, past or present, seem to resonate with you?
Additional topics discussed include news on an upcoming 2024 redesign of a certain Japanese truck that will include a six-speed manual, a reorganization of a set of British brands that are now being marketed as a “House of Brands,” and a new Shelby American vehicle that won’t be sold in America (!). All that plus our current AutoHunter picks can be seen in the above video from AutoHunter Cinema, created by the experts behind ClassicCars.com, the world’s largest online collector car marketplace. AutoHunter brings forth a dedicated live customer support team, quicker auction listings and exclusive benefits for both buyers and sellers.
