No. 1 Valley Christian 11, St. Ignatius 2
The Bay Area’s No. 1 team cruised past St. Ignatius, scoring double-digit runs for the ninth time this season as it improved its record to 21-3 and 12-0 in the West Catholic Athletic League.
With the victory, it moved one win closer to becoming the first team in the MaxPreps era (since 2004) to go undefeated in WCAL play.
SI kept the game close until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Valley Christian poured on seven runs to take control of the game. Quinten Marsh had quite a day, hitting a home run and driving in five runs to lead the VC offense.
Assisting him was Jordan Ortiz, who batted 3 for 3 and drove in two runs. Carmelo Rivera, PJ Moutzouridis, Michael Castaneda and Brock Ketelsen also had RBIs. Evann Smith drove in a run for St. Ignatius (13-10, 5-7).
Following a non-league game against Jesuit-Carmichael on Saturday, Valley Christian can clinch the WCAL crown with a win against Bellarmine on Tuesday.
No. 15 Menlo-Atherton 2, No. 17 Burlingame 0
Menlo-Atherton juniors Thomas Scott and Harrison Long combined for a very eventful one-hitter in a game that kept M-A (14-6, 8-1) atop the PAL standings and handed Burlingame (13-4, 7-3) its third league loss.
In the process, the Bears snapped Burlingame’s nine-game winning streak.
While the M-A pitching duo kept the hits to a minimum, Burlingame got on base eight times due to walks. Sophomore Will Roberts drove in one M-A run, and junior Trevor Heinz had the other Menlo-Atherton RBI. Sophomore David Lopez had two hits for M-A.
The win helps Menlo-Atherton, but the league race is far from over. Menlo-Atherton plays Live Oak in a non-league game, and then follows that up with five more league games. Meanwhile, Burlingame has four more league games left.
Skyline 19, Castlemont 0
The Titans showed why they are the class of the Oakland Athletic League with another lopsided victory over Castlemont.
Skyline’s Andre Hardy had quite an outing in his first pitching appearance of the season. The junior did not allow a hit in four innings of work as Skyline stayed a perfect 7-0 in league play
“There are some things I can work on, but I think i did pretty well,” Hardy said.
Castlemont’s (1-5, 1-4) best stretch came in the first inning, when pitcher Sean Hutchens stuck out three batters.
“Competitiveness has never been the issue for us,” Castlemont coach Nate Osborne said. ”We have lots of fight, lots of heart and lots of pride.”
Skyline freshman Isaac Okajima batted 3 for 3 and scored four runs, and senior Keanu Henning was 2 for 2 and had two RBIs. However, Henning’s greatest contribution came behind the plate, where he effortlessly threw out several Castlemont runners when they tried to steal.
“I’m always putting in the work because nothing comes easy for me,” Hennings said. “I put time into my craft. ”
With the victory, Skyline remains two games ahead of Oakland Tech in the OAL. If Skyline can win one of its two remaining games against Oakland High, Skyline will clinch its third consecutive regular-season OAL title.
No. 2 Archbishop Mitty 3, No. 10 Bellarmine 1
A stellar outing from junior ace Luka PIntar helped keep Mitty’s (19-5, 10-2) hopes of a West Catholic Athletic League title alive in a tight victory over Bellarmine (14-8-1, 6-6).
Pintar threw all seven innings, striking out eight, allowing two hits and surrendering just one unearned run. It was Pintar’s fourth consecutive start in which he went the distance for the Monarchs.
Senior Jarren Advincula went 2 for 4 and drove in two RBIs, and fellow senior Alijah Ramos also batted 2 for 4 and drove in Mitty’s other run. Chase Knight and Luke Rooney had Bellarmine’s two hits.
No. 11 San Ramon Valley (5-5), California (5-5)
The Wolves improved to a winning 6-5 record in East Bay Athletic League play in a game that saw SRV get big performances from several batters.
Two-sport star Luke Baker belted a one-run home run from the lefthand side, and teammate Lucas Glazier went 3 for 3 with a double and RBI. Julian Cambra and Jordan Rutchena also had two hits apiece for SRV (14-8).
Pitcher Bryce Hix closed out the game with four scoreless innings, in which he allowed zero hits, no walks and did not strike out a single batter.
California (9-12, 5-6) sophomore Ryan Giffins hit two doubles and drove in two RBIs for the Grizzlies, and Aidan Camberg also had a Cal RBI.
No. 7 Amador Valley 6, No. 4 Granada 3
A big fourth inning gave Amador Valley the edge over its EBAL rival Granada. The Don’s victory also tied the Pleasanton school with Granada for second in the EBAL standings at 7-4.
Trailing 3-1 entering that inning, Amador Valley (16-4, 7-4) tied the game with an Evan Berry single into right.
Tyler Kubo then gave his team a 5-3 lead with a double into center field. Junior pitchers Matthew Foley and Brady Lederer held Granada scoreless after that.
Mitchell Kreider also blasted a home run in the fifth inning to give Granada a three-run cushion.
Granada (16-6, 7-4) senior Jason Krakoski drove in two runs and went 1 for 3, and Colin Johnston drove in the other Granada run.
Amador Valley closes its regular season with two games against Foothill, and Granada plays Livermore to finish EBAL play. De La Salle, which routed Dougherty Valley Friday night, has already clinched the EBAL title.
Softball
No. 1 Archbishop Mittyv12, Presentation 2
Archbishop Mitty, now winners of eight straight, remained atop the WCAL with a five-inning victory over Presentation.
Freshman McKenna Woliczko batted 3 for 4 and scored three runs, and junior teammate Mia Rodriguez also scored three runs and had one RBI. Junior Cara Edwards hit a home run and had two RBIs, and junior Keira Brady went 2 for 3 with three RBIs.
Senior Alison Madia performed well in her first bit of extended action on mound, throwing six innings and striking out five. It was the first time Madia had thrown more than one inning in a game.
Mitty, now 16-2 and 6-0 in the WCAL, has no room for error in its pursuit of a league title. After a non-league game at Hollister, three of Mitty’s last four WCAL games come against ranked teams. This includes a rematch at No. 2 St. Francis.
No. 2 St. Francis 7, No. 14 St. Ignatius 0
St. Francis took care of business against WCAL opponent St. Ignatius thanks in large part to a dominant performance from junior pitcher Shannon Keighran.
The Boise State commit struck out 17, walked none and allowed only one hit. It was only the second time this season Keighran had struck out double-digit batters.
Freshman Jaime Oakland went 3 for 3 with an RBI, and seniors Chloe Cummings and Alexis O’Gorman each had two hits for St. Francis. Junior Rebecca Quinn and sophomore Hayden Hummel combined for three RBIs.
Mt. Eden 15, Encinal 14
It required an extra inning, but Mt. Eden took its place atop the West Alameda County Conference-Shoreline Division with a 15-14 victory over second-place Encinal.
Sophomore Kailyn Trigos’s ground ball to second-base got Athlete of the Week winner Annelise Burgos across the plate in the top of the eighth. Pitcher Andrea Toledo then closed out the game.
Mt. Eden actually led 14-11 entering the bottom of the seventh, but a Riley Chadwick solo home run with two outs started a game-tying Encinal rally.
Toledo led Mt. Eden with four RBIs in a 4 for 5 day, and right fielder Shelby Anne Newcomb hit a home run and went 3 for 5. Trigos drove in three runs, and senior Adriana Monroe went 3 for 5 with an RBI.
Encinal’s Lola Whalen hit a home run and drove in six runs, and sophomore teammate Jazzy Alcantar hit a triple and had three RBIs. Freshman Kiely Wong scored four runs and had two hits and two RBIs.
The victory improves Mt. Eden to 12-4 and 6-1 in the league, and Encinal slips to 8-9 and 5-2 in WACC play.
