Dougherty Valley shocks No. 9 San Ramon Valley
Two days and a change of scenery made all the difference for Dougherty Valley right-hander Cody Williams.
The 5-foot-7 senior pitched a complete game on Friday as the host Wildcats stunned San Ramon Valley – ranked ninth by the Bay Area News Group – 3-0 in an East Bay Athletic League game.
SRV was 12-0 all-time against Dougherty entering the game.
Williams allowed three hits, struck out six and walked none as the Wildcats improved to 8-10 overall and 3-7 in the league.
SRV fell to 13-7, 5-4.
It was quite a turnaround for Williams.
Wednesday, he allowed three runs in one inning as San Ramon Valley beat the Wildcats 9-5.
The complete game was Williams’ fourth of the season – all victories – and the shutout was his second. He also blanked Deer Valley.
Ethan Kim, Jayden Rouse and Brayden Braga each drove in runs – all in the second inning – and Evon Williams had two hits and scored a run to lead Dougherty on Friday.
The result dropped SRV three games behind first-place De La Salle in the EBAL’s Mountain Division.
The Wolves are a game ahead of third-place California and two in front of Dougherty and Monte Vista. The top three teams in the division qualify for the league playoffs.
No. 1 Valley Christian 7, No. 16 St. Francis 0
Valley Christian remained red hot. St. Francis continued to struggle.
That about summed up this West Catholic Athletic League game that was probably circled in red ink as a must-see matchup when the schedule came out.
Instead, Valley won its sixth in a row to up its record to 18-3, 9-0, and St. Francis — the defending Central Coast Section Division I champion — lost for the fifth time in six games to fall to 11-10, 3-6.
Michael Castaneda pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts and Jacob Hudson hit a three-run double in a five-run first inning to lead host Valley.
Valley maintained its one-game lead over Archbishop Mitty in the WCAL standings with five to play.
No. 2 Archbishop Mitty 9, Sacred Heart Cathedral 6
Matteo Blandino had a double and knocked in two runs and Aiden Strong, Kyle Scritzky and Wills Towers combined for 10 strikeouts as Mitty won at home over Sacred Heart Cathedral in WCAL play.
Both teams scored three runs in the first.
Mitty took the lead for good with three in the third to break a 4-4 tie.
Jack Ruegg had three hits and scored a run and Gabe Melara had two hits and three RBIs for SHC.
Mitty improved to 17-4, 8-1. SHC is 9-12, 2-7.
No. 3 Amador Valley 14, Livermore 1
Two days after suffering a shocking loss at home to Livermore, Amador Valley made sure there would be no upset in the rematch.
Tyler Kubo went 5 for 6 with a double and three RBIs and Riley Borges had four hits, including two doubles, and knocked in four as Amador breezed on the road to the EBAL victory.
Matthew Foley allowed one run in six innings as the Dons upped their record to 14-4, 5-4.
Livermore, which got three hits from sophomore AJ Cook, is 9-11, 1-8.
No. 6 Bellarmine 6, Archbishop Riordan 3
Thomas Trombatore went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs to lead Bellarmine to a victory at home over Archbishop Riordan in a WCAL game.
Ryan Bays and Chris Rudell also doubled and Rudell allowed a run and struck out five in four innings for the Bells, who improved to 13-6-1, 5-4.
Riordan dropped to 11-10, 0-9.
No. 13 Foothill 6, Dublin 1
Foothill completed a two-game sweep of Dublin in EBAL play as Landon Comerford hit a double and had three RBIs and Jackson Flora pitched a two-hitter without allowing an earned run to lead the Falcons to the road victory.
In the two games this week against Dublin, Foothill outscored the Gaels 15-1.
Dublin has lost three in a row and four of five to fall to 13-6, 5-5.
Foothill is 12-6, 6-4.
No. 8 Serra 9, St. Ignatius 1
Serra spotted St. Ignatius a run in the top of the first, then took command as the Padres won the WCAL game to up their record to 13-5, 5-4.
SI fell to 12-8, 4-5.
Samuel Rivas had two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs and Ian Josephson allowed one run — a homer by Evann Smith — and struck out seven in a complete-game gem.
No. 10 Los Gatos 6, Wilcox 1
Massimo Richiuso pitched six strong innings, allowing one unearned run and two hits, and Carter Johnstone had two hits and scored a run to lead host Los Gatos past Wilcox for the second time this week.
The Wildcats (14-6, 8-0) maintained a two-game lead over Los Altos in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division standings.
Wilcox is 10-9, 4-4.
Softball
No. 1 St. Francis 13, No. 12 Valley Christian 1 (5 innings)
St. Francis, playing on the road, bounced back from a loss this week to Mitty, rolling past Valley Christian in WCAL play behind home runs from Shannon Keighran and Hannah Cushing and eight strikeouts in five innings from Keighran in the pitching circle.
Carly Cummings added two hits, including a double, and three RBIs.
The Lancers scored a run in the first and four in each of the next three innings as they upped their record to 17-2, 2-1.
Valley is 12-5, 3-2.
No. 2 Archbishop Mitty 4, St. Ignatius 0
Mitty extended its winning streak to six as Corri Hicks and Cara Edwards each homered and freshman Kyleigh Mace pitched six innings with seven strikeouts to lead the Monarchs past visiting St. Ignatius in a WCAL game.
Sara Pina also doubled and knocked in a run for Mitty, which upped its record to 14-2, 4-0.
SI slipped to 7-3, 2-1.
No. 4 Pinole Valley 7, El Cerrito 3
Pinole Valley remained undefeated as Kailani Tatro struck out 12 and Aneesa Brewer homered in a victory on the road over El Cerrito in Tri-County Athletic League Rock Division play.
Brewer finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Milanya Rosales added two hits and two RBIs as Pinole Valley improved to 19-0, 8-0.
El Cerrito fell to 3-10, 0-7.
No. 5 Granada 9, Dougherty Valley 2
Delaney Aumua hit two doubles and a triple and Lauren Deplitch went 2 for 3 with four RBIs as Granada won on the road over Dougherty Valley in an EBAL game.
Granada (15-3, 8-1) scored two in the first and took charge with four in the fifth, which stretched the Matadors’ advantage to 6-1.
Taylor Yee had two hits and two RBIs for Dougherty (6-8, 1-7).
No 13 Milpitas 12, Gonzales 1 (5 innings)
Madeline Le and April Price each homered and Priyah Quinonez allowed one run in five innings as Milpitas cruised at home to the non-league victory.
Le also doubled twice and knocked in three runs and Chloe Cabrera had two hits and drove in four as Milpitas upped its record to 15-3.
Gonzales is 7-10.
