Vehicles can be considered television or movie stars just like actors and actresses can. Consider the DMC DeLorean from the Back to the Future trilogy, the Plymouth Fury from Christine, and the Pontiac Trans Am from Knight Rider. Heck, even the Walk of Fame in Hollywood now has a star dedicated to the Chevrolet Suburban just to commemorate the number of times that vehicle has appeared on-screen.
When Lethal Weapon 2 premiered in 1989, it prominently featured a 1988 GMC Sierra dually pickup that looked a lot like this one.
The Pick of the Day is a 1996 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 4×4 listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in Oak Hill, West Virginia. (Click the link to view the listing)
After a lengthy production run with the Rounded Line (third generation) of General Motors pickups, the “GMT400” platform was launched in model year 1988. This body style brought aerodynamic features like flush window glass, curved grilles and bumpers, and straighter lines than the Rounded Line. Production continued all the way until 2002 for certain variations of this pickup. Today, the GMT400-era trucks are commonly referred to as the “Old Body Style” or OBS, and they are gaining in collectability.
This black Silverado extended cab comes from model year 1996. It has a big-block 454cid Vortec V8 under the hood, along with a five-speed manual transmission sending power to all four wheels. With a drivetrain like that, this truck is a bit of a lethal weapon itself: Online resources state that this truck has a towing capacity of 8,500 pounds. To put that into perspective, that’s about the weight of four 1999 Ford Fiestas.
The seller states that the truck spent most of its time in Tennessee and the body is in nice shape. The grille, marker lights, and cab lights were replaced due to fading. The tires are also new, so this truck is reportedly ready to rock and roll at 114,000 miles. “No noises or leaks of any kind, drive it across the country,” the seller says.
“This truck makes you want to watch Lethal Weapon and pull a house down,” the listing concludes. “Only reason I’m selling is I decided I would rather have an automatic. I’m 54 and didn’t like shifting gears as much as I thought I would.”
The seller is asking $26,000 or best offer for this Silverado. Driving it will make you feel like an on-screen celebrity. Incidentally, here’s a link to the video clip from LW2!
