A man was arrested for elder abuse and neglect after an elderly woman was found with open wounds begging for help and wearing only an adult diaper.
Police said they were called to a home on the 500 block of South St. Andrews Street in the city of Dothan, Alabama, on Friday, March 24, and they found the woman alone, according to WTVY.
She was crawling on the floor and had numerous open wounds, police said, in addition to other medical maladies that were not being taken care of.
“It was awful,’’ said Dothan Police Lt. Ronald Hall.
That same day, police arrested 37-year-old Jason Allan Proctor who is a relative of the woman and is also her primary caregiver. He also allegedly lives in the same residence.
“The victim was transported to a Dothan hospital where she was admitted for inpatient treatment and may have to undergo surgery,” Hall added.
Proctor is being held at the Houston County Jail without bond.
Police did not specify the age of the victim.
A similar case was reported by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office in February in Royal Palm Beach, Florida. A man was arrested for kidnapping, elderly neglect and abuse, and carrying a firearm during a felony after police found that he had been neglecting his 91-year-old father and his 82-year-old mother.
Investigators said that Christopher Gissoni’s father suffered from a brain bleed while his mother was “extremely emaciated” and weighed between 75 to 80 pounds as a result of her son’s neglect. Neighbors said that they had witnessed him yelling and cursing at his mother.
