Luxury carmaker Genesis is taking another step toward electrification with a third EV model, the 2023 Electrified GV70, which joins the GV60 SUV and the Electrified G80 sedan. Based on the gasoline-powered GV70 SUV, the Electrified GV70 looks just as fabulous but swaps in two electric motors making a combined 483 horsepower. Performance is predictably intoxicating, and we estimate that the Electrified GV70 will hit 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds. Driving range isn’t as generous as you’ll find on rivals such as the Cadillac Lyriq or the Tesla Model X, but we think its 236-mile estimate will be enough for many buyers. All-wheel drive is standard, and the Electrified GV70 will come with a fast-charging system that will allow the battery to be juiced from 10 percent to 80 percent in under 20 minutes.

The Electrified GV70 is a new nameplate for the Genesis lineup, and it has launched as a 2023 model with sales starting mid-year.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

As expected, the Electrified GV70 carries a big premium over the gasoline-powered model, but the EV variant skips over the regular GV70’s base and Select versions and goes right for the good stuff with Advanced and Prestige trim levels. That means it’s well-equipped right from the get-go, with standard features including a digital gauge display, leather upholstery, 20-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, and a wireless smartphone charging pad, among other items.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

All-wheel drive is standard on the Electrified GV70, and it uses two motors, one on each axle, to achieve its combined 483-hp rating. After taking an Electrified GV70 for a short test drive, we reckon the SUV will hit 60 mph in just 3.8 seconds, which would make it the fastest version of Genesis’s compact SUV. We tested the regular 2022 GV70 with the optional twin-turbocharged V-6 and made it to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. Like its gas-powered sibling, the Electrified GV70 feels light on its feet in corners and offers a comfortable ride too. Our primary complaint with the SUV’s road manners is its brake pedal feel, which doesn’t feel as consistent through its travel from regenerative braking to the friction braking systems.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The Electrified GV70 comes standard with a 77.4-kWh battery pack that’s good for up to 236 miles of driving per charge. The SUV also sports a fast onboard charger that can max out at 240kW on a DC charging connection. Genesis says that’s quick enough to get the battery from 10 to 80 percent charged in less than 20 minutes at a public charging station.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

The EPA says the Electrified GV70 should deliver 98 MPGe city and 83 MPGe highway. When we get a chance, we’ll take the Electrified GV70 on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route and update this story with its test results. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Electrified GV70 shares its interior with its gasoline-powered counterpart, which means it wears a similarly impressive design and offers an upscale ambiance. Interior space is appropriate for the compact-SUV class, and expect cargo space is nearly identical to the gas model.

Infotainment and Connectivity

A large widescreen infotainment display stands proud on the dash and will run the latest version of Genesis’s software interface. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard but neither one works with a wireless connection. All models come with a Wi-Fi hotspot but the premium Lexicon stereo system is available as an option.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

A full suite of driver-assistance features is standard on every Electrified GV70 model, including automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The Genesis brand offers excellent warranty coverage that stretches for far longer than most other premium automakers. The GV70 comes with powertrain coverage for up to 10 years or 100,000 miles and complimentary scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles. The Jaguar I-Pace offers similar bumper-to-bumper coverage and longer complimentary maintenance, but the powertrain policy is nearly half that of the Genesis’s.
