A report of a kangaroo with a bad leg beside I-680 in the Bay Area on Saturday morning appears to have been erroneous. The animal by the highway was probably an injured deer, police said.
California Highway Patrol Sgt. Matt Gutierrez had said Sunday morning that it appeared a kangaroo with a “bum leg” was on the loose in Alamo, and that an officer in the area was trying to find the owner.
But no kangaroo — an animal native to Australia — was found, and two reports of an injured deer by the highway from around the same time suggested the person reporting a kangaroo on the roadside had instead seen a hurt deer, Gutierrez said.
The hopping movements of injured deer have in the past generated calls about kangaroos, Gutierrez said.
The Highway Patrol responded to the Contra Costa County incident, first reported publicly in a tweet by news website Danville/San Ramon Updates, around 10:45 a.m. Saturday.
