Multiple swastikas and a picture of Adolf Hitler were found on a whiteboard attached to a Stanford University dorm room door, university officials said.
In a March 11 letter to students, top officials said the student living in the Florence Moore Hall dorm was “alarmed” to find the pictures and alerted residential staff. The student is Jewish, according to the letter.
The Stanford University Department of Public Safety is investigating the matter and believes the swastikas were being used to “intimidate” the student.
“We wish to be clear: Stanford wholeheartedly rejects antisemitism, racism, hatred, and associated symbols, which are reprehensible and will not be tolerated,” Susie Brubaker-Cole, vice provost for student affairs; Patrick Dunkley, vice provost for institutional equity, access and community; Laurie Hahn Tapper, campus rabbi and associate dean for religious and spiritual life and Tiffany Steinwert, dean for religious and spiritual life wrote in the letter. “We have been reaching out with care and concern to the students directly impacted by this incident, as well as to FloMo residents and our Jewish student community.”
This isn’t the first incident being investigated by the university as a hate crime in recent years.
Last May, a noose was found hanging from a tree. Three years prior to that in July 2019, a noose was found hanging from a bush.
Swastikas have also been found spray painted on a fraternity house and student residences, as well as around campus and throughout Palo Alto over the last decade.
