A cleaning crew found $5.4 million worth of drugs and a sizable stash of weapons at a short-term rental in Scottsdale, Arizona, KPNX reported.
“It was a large quantity of illegal drugs that were discovered in that residence,” Sgt. Kevin Quon, a public information officer with Scottsdale Police Department told the outlet. “The street value is approximately $5.4 million with the totality of all the drugs that were seized.”
Police praised the cleaning crew for calling right away to report what they had seen. The crew were at the property to clean up after after the people who had rented it.
“They did the right thing … Detectives came out, wrote a search warrant,” Quon told the outlet about the discovery, which was made in late December.
In all, 1.7 million fentanyl pills, 110 pounds of methamphetamine, and 7.5 pounds of cocaine were found at the short-term rental near 86th Street and Camelback Road.
In addition to the massive stash of illicit drugs, police also found a number of weapons and magazines. In the photo police provided to WPNX, at least 20 firearms are visible, including long guns and pistols.
Though the owner of the short-term rental has been cooperating, police said they have made no arrests to date. They are requesting tips from anyone with information about the situation and advising the community to be vigilant.
“If you live there and there is a short-term rental property and there is activity, maybe suspicious activity, let us know that,” Quon advised.
It remains unclear through what platform, if any, the rental was made.
Airbnb denied involvement, with a spokesperson telling WPNX they generally try to nix unsafe bookings by running criminal background checks on hosts and guests.
Vrbo did not respond to the outlet’s repeated requests for comment. Vrbo, which is owned by Expedia, has over 2 million bookable vacation rentals, according to their website.
“We support owners by educating them about best practices for creating safe and private spaces for travelers, and we use technology to verify the identities of owners and guests whenever possible,” Vrbo‘s website also says.
The deadline for complying with a city ordinance requiring owners to license short-term rental properties in Scottsdale expired January 8. In December, Scottsdale Mayor David D. Ortega urged all owners to act immediately. As of December 14, only 530 of an estimated 5,000 Scottsdale property owners had applied for or received the necessary license.
