Every year our writers and editors head to Idaho for the Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous. At the event, firearm manufacturers trot out some of their newest and coolest wares. Of course, no firearm event would be the same without Wilson Combat, which brought its AR9X Carbine. The soft shooting AR is more than just a converted AR-15—it stands in a class of its own.

The Wilson Combat AR9X Carbine

Building on a billet-machined aluminum receiver, the AR9X retains the familiar handling and controls of the AR platform. Likewise, the AR9 receiver accepts standard MIL-SPEC AR accessories. This includes furniture, triggers, charging handles, buttstocks, and optics. However, it ships with the Wilson Combat/BCM Starburst Gunfighter Grip and Wilson/Rogers Super-Stoc already installed.

The billet upper features the Wilson Combat M-LOK rail (suitable for gas block coverage) with full-length top Picatinny rail. As a result, you can mount any additional accessories you would like, including lights, night vision, and lasers.

Housed within the handguard is a 16-inch Wilson Combat match grade 9mm button-rifled barrel with 1-10” twist and 5/8×24 threaded muzzle. Although the muzzle comes with a Wilson Combat Q-Comp Muzzle brake installed, it is ready to accept a suppressor easily. Correspondingly, the AR9 is an optimized suppressor host with minimal gas blowback and enhanced accuracy over other designs.

The proprietary bolt carrier group features a heavy-duty claw extractor and plunger ejector tuned for exceptional reliability. Additionally, the closed-bolt blowback operating system provides a soft shooting experience with a wide variety of 9mm loads.

Likewise, it offers excellent feed reliability with all common bullet profiles, including hollow point and +P tactical ammunition. Similarly, the bolt lock ensures reliable lockback on empty with your pistol’s factory magazines.

A flared magwell ensures fast reloads and accepts the most popular 9mm service pistol magazines from Glock, Beretta, and the Wilson Combat EDC X9. Finally, rounds are sent downrange via the Wilson Combat TTU (Tactical Trigger Unit) with a four-pound pull.
