OAKLAND — An armed carjacking suspect was shot by police Friday afternoon in East Oakland, authorities said.
The man was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition Friday night.
There were no reports of officers or the carjacking victim being injured.
The shooting happened just after 12:45 p.m. in the area of 105th Avenue and International Boulevard.
Prior to the shooting, a traffic officer spotted a motorcyclist driving recklessly in the area of 98th and Bancroft avenues, the police department said in a statement. The officer did not pursue the motorcyclist and instead notified a police helicopter unit, which continued to follow the motorcyclist as he drove through East Oakland.
The motorcyclist later crashed near 105th Avenue and International Boulevard. He then ran eastbound toward 107th Avenue and International, where he “attempted an armed carjacking,” police said.
Officers ordered the man to drop his firearm, police said.
“The individual did not comply with the officers’ commands,” police said. “For the safety of the victim and our community, officers discharged their firearms and struck the armed individual.”
Minnie Talavera said she was at a gas station at 102nd Avenue and International Boulevard when she saw a motorcyclist going eastbound on International “flying through a red light.”
She said she started running in the same direction and saw the man on the motorcycle crash into the center divide.
Talavera said she then heard an officer say, “’Hold up, put your hands up in the air,’ or something like that,” before hearing gunfire that prompted her to run around a corner for safety.
She said she thought she heard about five gunshots and when she looked around the corner she saw “a man in the street bleeding.”
Numerous streets in the area were shut down while police investigated, including canvassing for witnesses.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy. Their names were not released Friday.
Also in accordance with department policy, the OPD Homicide Section, Internal Affairs Division and Community Police Review Agency are investigating the shooting.
